celebrity on the red carpet

Sleep apnea is a common condition, affecting at least 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women (though that number is likely higher given the prevalence of gender biases in medical research). It is a disorder characterized by loud snoring and frequent waking during sleep due to an obstruction in the flow of air through the mouth and throat.

Sleep apnea in Weatherford isn’t the most glamorous of conditions, but you might be surprised to find out that some of the most high profile celebrities are dealing with this condition as well. Keep reading to find out who!

#1: Shaquille O’Neal

More famously known as “Shaq,” the famous basketball player was also reported to be dealing with sleep apnea, for which he visited the Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine for diagnosis. Getting a sleep study is a common tactic for getting to the root of what is causing snoring, chronic fatigue, and other symptoms of sleep apnea.

#2: Rosie O’Donnell

The hit comedian said in an interview that she completed a sleep study at home to help her doctor determine the cause of her slumber issues. Once a proper diagnosis was reached, treatment with CPAP, or a continuous positive airway pressure machine, was prescribed – and O’Donnell said that after one night of use with the CPAP she noticed an incredible difference. Sleep truly is a basic need!

#3: William Shatner

Hugely famous for his portrayal of James Kirk in Star Trek, William Shatner also deals with sleep apnea – but he is clearly keeping it under control, because the 83-year-old man still keeps up with a busy celebrity schedule!

#4: Randy Jackson

Fans of American Idol recognize Randy Jackson as one of the longest-running judges, but they likely don’t realize he has sought treatment for sleep apnea. He also has Type II diabetes, which is commonly associated with this particular sleep disorder. After losing some weight and getting healthier overall, Jackson is reportedly snoozing better and feeling more fantastic than ever.

#5: Amy Poehler

Comedian, writer, actress, producer, and director Amy Poehler once said in an interview that she has always struggled with snoring. She has a CPAP machine, which she said she doesn’t always feel like using – we wonder if she has looked into CPAP alternatives, like oral appliance therapy, which is far more convenient.

There you have it – 5 of the super-famous men and women who are dealing with sleep apnea. The common thread, though? They have all sought treatment! Don’t wait to follow in their steps by reaching out to a sleep dentist to discuss a solution for your sleep woes today.
