April 16, 2016
Have you been accused of loud, excessive snoring? Do you ever wake up feeling tired or with headaches? Do you feel exhausted by the afternoon, finding it hard to complete your daily activities? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may have a sleep disorder known as sleep apnea. This is a serious disorder that causes patients to stop breathing multiple times per night. Because of the lack of oxygen, your brain and other organs suffer and your heart has to work harder throughout the night. Dr. Deborah Romack is here to explain more about sleep apnea and how your sleep apnea center in Weatherford can help.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea and it affects millions of Americans. It occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax and cause your airway to become obstructed. This can result in chronic, loud snoring that is often noticed by your bed partner. Low oxygen levels signal the brain to wake you up and this can happen anywhere from a few to a hundred times per night.
What are the Effects of Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is dangerous not only because you stop breathing multiple times per night, but also because it causes and contributes to many serious heath concerns such as heart attacks and strokes. Those who suffer from sleep apnea may also suffer from depression, memory and focus challenges, irritability, chronic fatigue, and headaches.
How is Sleep Apnea Treated?
Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP therapy is the most common way to manage sleep apnea. The downfalls of the CPAP machine is that it requires you to wear a mask throughout the night and the machine is quite loud, making it challenging for everyone in the room to sleep peacefully.
Modern dentistry is offering patients another way to manage sleep apnea that is more comfortable, and that is through oral appliance therapy. There are different types of oral appliances and this is why it’s important to work closely with your provider to determine which one is best for your specific needs.
At Weatherford Dental Sleep Medicine, Dr. Deborah Romak has been continuously educating herself about sleep apnea and the successful treatment of it through oral appliance therapy since 2005. She is equipped with the latest technology and knowledge needed to identify sleep apnea and other breathing disorders, and she has helped countless patients successfully manage their sleep disorders.
